On Mother's Day, authorities say, Robert Daniels boasted about his handiwork with a handgun.
Three days earlier, on May 7, Daniels, 25, walked into the Crown Fried Chicken on Mount Ephraim Avenue in Camden around 10:15 p.m. and shot Dwayne McCants in the head over drug turf while the Lindenwold man waited at the counter, authorities allege.
Police found McCants, 32, surrounded by a pool of blood, and he died the following day at Cooper University Hospital. Daniels was caught on surveillance before and after the shooting and allegedly told more than one witness afterward that he had pulled the trigger, authorities said.
"He spoke with a different witness on Mother's Day and when asked if he did it, he said, 'That was my work at the Crown Fried Chicken,' " Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Mary Alison Albright said in Superior Court yesterday.
Daniels, who has had numerous weapons and drug offenses as a juvenile and as an adult, seemed unfazed by the accusations and the potential life sentence and had nothing to say about the $750,000 bail ordered by Superior Court Judge Thomas Brown.
Daniels was arrested Tuesday by U.S. marshals at a Camden house and charged with murder.
About 24 of McCants' family members and friends were in court, crying and shaking their heads as Daniels was led in and out in an orange jumpsuit and shackles.
Several declined to comment after the hearing. McCants also served time for assault and drug charges.
McCants' death is the 11th homicide this year in Camden.
